On September 28th- 30th, the streets of downtown Mt. Vernon will be flooded with excitement as the Mt. Vernon Fall Fest presented by Continental Tire returns for its 7th year! Head to 9th St. and the surrounding downtown area for a weekend packed with free entertainment, festival food, craft vendors, and other fun fall festivities!
Children of all ages can enjoy the kids zone all three days featuring free inflatables, R & J Tactical Lazer Tag, and a petting zoo. Kids can paint on a canvas for free from 12- 2 p.m. on Saturday. Also returning this year are pay to play primitive escape games, the Touch of Nature Climbing Wall, Monster Spider Jump, and face painting.
A wide selection of art, craft, resale, vintage, repurposed, and informational vendor booths will be open for shopping all weekend long. Take your time as you walk down 9th St. and browse our talented vendors! Food concessions include all your favorite delicious festival food like kettle corn, lemon shake-ups, BBQ, corn dogs, pretzels, funnel cakes, gyros, and more! Stop by the beer and wine tent for a selection of adult beverages all weekend.
Fall Fest presented by Continental Tire FREE live entertainment kicks off at 5:15 p.m., Friday September 28th, with St. Louis band, Big Rain. Big Rain focuses on new music from pop, rock, indie, and alternative genres. They cover music from One Republic, Imagine Dragons, Pharrell, Gavin Degraw, Fitz and the Tantrums, Maroon 5, and more. At 8 p.m. Friday night, Platinum Rock Legends (PRL) will take the stage. PRL is the ultimate rock tribute band impersonating favorite legends including Journey, Bon Jovi, Queen, and even boy bands like Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync. PRL is described as a Las Vegas style rock concert super show with entertaining productions that rely heavily on audience participation.
Saturday is packed full of activities for all ages beginning with the 3rd Annual 5k for Jefferson County Special Olympics sponsored by Sean Featherstun for States Attorney will start at 8 a.m. with a new route beginning from 9th and Harrison St. All proceeds benefit local Special Olympics. Participants can register online at www.active.com or www.river2river.net. The Downtown Mt. Vernon Cruise-In featuring over 70 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will take place from 9:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. Enjoy music by Hot Rod Nights and win door prizes!
The Crossroads Community Hospital Parade will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 29th, celebrating Illinois’ Bicentennial with the theme, “Illinois Proud: Celebrating 200 Years”. Fall Fest presented by Continental Tire is an official endorsed Bicentennial event for the state. Parade entries are still being accepted as participants are encouraged to build floats, decorate trailers, trucks, and automobiles all to the theme of Illinois Proud! The growing Marching Band Expo awarding thousands of dollars in prize money to local marching band programs will return in this year’s parade.
The Mt. Vernon Business Women’s Club will once again host their Great Pumpkin contest from 8- 11 a.m. The contest consists of two age groups, kindergarten- 8th grade and High School- Adults. Pumpkins are judged by overall appearance, originality, and creativity. The top three pumpkins in each category will be awarded. Entries with an Illinois theme will receive bonus points! The Tri-State Treasure Hunt for Kids will start at 11 a.m. Coordinated by the Tri-State Metal Detecting Club, this treasure hunt gives kids the chance to hunt for coins using metal detectors. Coins can be kept, and additional prizes are awarded.
“Beacon of Hope” sponsored by the Drug Court Coalition of Jefferson County will start at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Courthouse Square with Judge Jo Beth Weber and others speaking. At 7:45 p.m. that evening, stay for a special ceremony and lighting of luminaries to remember those past and present struggling with drug addiction.
Saturday’s entertainment begins at 12 p.m. with local husband and wife duo, D~N~A Acoustic. Saturday evening’s entertainment will get underway with local southern Illinois band, U-Foria at 6:15 p.m. They feature former Mt. Vernon resident, Miranda Joy Willmore on vocals. Currently touring the United States, U-Foria focuses on country, rock, blues, original, and cover songs. At 8:15 p.m., the 2018 Fall Fest by Continental Tire’s headliner, Illinois native and rising country music star, Mo Pitney will perform. Pitney’s classic country sound can be compared to the traditional country greats Randy Travis and George Strait. He has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Lake Shake festival in Chicago, and the Country to Country festival in London. His single “Country” peaked at #35 on the Billboard Country charts in 2015. Other singles include “Boy & A Girl Thing”, “Clean Up on Aisle Five”, and “Come Do a Little Life”.
Blues Day returns to Fall Fest on Sunday the 30th with Blues entertainment all day long. At 11 a.m. enjoy southern Illinois blues trio, Cat Daddy’O. They feature a thundering rhythm section with an old-school rhythm and blues style Then, at 1:15 p.m., listen to the soul sounds of Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band. Their soul music is described as more Mississippi River and less New York City. Their sound combines the funky feel of New Orleans R&B with the power and intensity of East St. Louis’ own Ike & Tina Turner. Closing out Fall Fest presented by Continental Tire at 3:15 p.m. is St. Louis native, Marquise Knox. Knox was nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut with his album, Manchild, recorded when he was only 16. Marquise's blues talents have allowed him to perform with blues legends B.B. King, Pinetop Perkins, and David “Honeyboy” Edwards.
Fall Fest provides local, affordable, fun for families, with a free kid's zone, free parking, and free musical entertainment.
